05/19/2005: "About Me"

Who am I

My name is David Shield. I'm 25. I'm a Mechanical Engineer by profession, graduating from the University of Bath in South West England in 2005. Since graduating I have worked for a company in Nottingham specialising in transmission design.

I am getting married in September 2007 to Sarah.

Music

I love playing and listening to music. I play guitar, bass, and drums (all fairly badly) and occasionally entertain delusions of being in a band. I was actually in several bands at uni, none of which got out of the practice room. I was also involved in running a load of live music events, and DJ'ing at various other events of a rock persuasion.

In terms of what my musical tastes are, it doesn't fall into any neat genre, beyond saying I don't like pop music. Some arbitrary bands that deserve a mention would be:

...Manic Street Preachers, The Clash, Sonic Boom Six, Howards Alias, Frank Turner, Capdown, No Comply, Asian Dub Foundation, System of a Down, Suede, Placebo, Queen Adreena....

but there's 250+ CD's in my house, so this is just a start.

Motorbikes

I've been riding since early 2002, passing my test in November of that year. I'm currently enjoying a Kawasaki ZXR400 L3 which I've had since early 2005. I also still own my previous bike, a 1978 Suzuki GS400, which is currently the subject of a little project (i.e., it's in pieces).

Other Stuff

I also keep myself amused by flying kites, windsurfing, and doing all sorts of bizarre circus arts, such as juggling, poi, staff and diabolo. I particularly enjoy setting things on fire!
