Noise and sunshine.

Soundtrack: Asian Dub Foundation - Community Music
Mood: Tired

Somehow it's Thursday already. The last couple of days have been a bit of a blur, but a pretty good blur!

Tuesday I went to 'An Evening of Noise' at Brooklands, with some people from Bike Club. We actually went down there in the morning to give us a chance to look around the museum during the afternoon - Brooklands museum is well worth a visit if you have any interest in old cars, bikes or aircraft.

The point of the evening was basically to start up a load of old bikes, run them round and noise test them. Some interesting bikes there, including Morini Tom's dad with his Vincent on open pipes, which turned out to be the loudest bike there at 124 dB. Ouch.

Being an evening event, it was nearly 10pm by the time we left and midnight by the time I fell into bed back in Bath. But no chance of a lie-in yesterday because I had to be on campus to help with One World's 'Summer Festival' by the lake, for which MusicSoc were lending equipment. As it turned out, I helped them set up and then went and joined Gravity Vomit who were there entertaining the masses. Did a bit of fire staff but mostly spent the day doing two diabolo, so I'm now fairly solid at the shuffle and starting to think about some tricks. Wicked!

Moving all the equipment back into the practise room at the end of the day really finished me off though. I've just about recovered now!

Pictures from the last couple of days might make it online at some point!

Colour Scheme

Predictably enough I got bored and started fiddling about with the look. Couldn't be bothered with making another logo with the right background colour though. We shall see.

Alt Bath Scene Forums

Soundtrack: NIN - Pretty Hate Machine

Anyone that happens to read this, the Alt Bath Scene forums have had a bit of a 'technical problem'. Liam's got them back up and running now, but all the posts and memberlist have vanished into thin air, so get back over there and sign up.

Talking of forums, I've spent today getting to grips with phpbb for the all new BUMCC website. The result can be found here. The board is working (although the rest of the site isn't), so if you happen to be vaguely connected to BUMCC then come and sign up.

You learn something every day...

Soundtrack: Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned
Mood: Sleepy

Apparently...

"Industrial music is music which uses irony to depict (and implicitly condemn) Man's inhumanity toward his fellow Man. Industrial music is called "Industrial" because it reflects the dehumanizing effect of the Industrial revolution, wherein human beings became reduced to expendable cogs in the Machine. Industrial music uses machines to take that which is most human, namely art and music, and twist and distort it in the same way that the Industrial revolution twisted and distorted humanity."

Whether you believe that or not is up to you. All I wanted to know was what EBM stood for (I found that as well, so in fact I learnt two things yesterday).

Nearly there

Soundtrack: The wonderful churnings of my Epson Stylus C42 Plus
Mood: Triumphant

It's almost over big grin

As I type this, my project report is coming out of the printer (slowly). All that remains is to give it a quick once over and do the contents page. I also need to put together a CD with the report and all the raw data on, but that can wait till the morning. 81 pages and about twelve and a half thousand words completed.

Hell yeah!

About Me

Who am I

My name is David Shield. I'm 25. I'm a Mechanical Engineer by profession, graduating from the University of Bath in South West England in 2005. Since graduating I have worked for a company in Nottingham specialising in transmission design.

I am getting married in September 2007 to Sarah.

Music

I love playing and listening to music. I play guitar, bass, and drums (all fairly badly) and occasionally entertain delusions of being in a band. I was actually in several bands at uni, none of which got out of the practice room. I was also involved in running a load of live music events, and DJ'ing at various other events of a rock persuasion.

In terms of what my musical tastes are, it doesn't fall into any neat genre, beyond saying I don't like pop music. Some arbitrary bands that deserve a mention would be:

...Manic Street Preachers, The Clash, Sonic Boom Six, Howards Alias, Frank Turner, Capdown, No Comply, Asian Dub Foundation, System of a Down, Suede, Placebo, Queen Adreena....

but there's 250+ CD's in my house, so this is just a start.

Motorbikes

I've been riding since early 2002, passing my test in November of that year. I'm currently enjoying a Kawasaki ZXR400 L3 which I've had since early 2005. I also still own my previous bike, a 1978 Suzuki GS400, which is currently the subject of a little project (i.e., it's in pieces).

Other Stuff

I also keep myself amused by flying kites, windsurfing, and doing all sorts of bizarre circus arts, such as juggling, poi, staff and diabolo. I particularly enjoy setting things on fire!
